Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly
modern play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military
discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered
dialogue and jagged episodes, which are as shocking and telling
today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the
author's death, in Munich 1913. This edition contains introductory
commentary and notes by Laura Martin from the University of
Glasgow. METHUEN DRAMA STUDENT EDITIONS are expertly annotated
texts of a wide range of plays from the modern and classic
repertoires. A well as the complete text of the play itself, this
volume contains: * A chronology of the play and the playwright's
life and work * an introductory discussion of the social,
political, cultural and economic context in which the play was
originally conceived and created * a succinct overview of the
creation processes followed and subsequent performance history of
the piece * an analysis of, and commentary on, some of the major
themes and specific issues addressed by the text * a bibliography
of suggested primary and secondary materials for further study.

Drama Classics: The World's Great Plays at a Great Little Price One
of the most performed and influential plays in German theatre,
Georg Buchner's Woyzeck is a modern classic that remains
frighteningly relevant today. Franz Woyzeck, a lowly soldier
stationed in a provincial German town, is bullied by his superiors
and starved by the regiment's doctor in the name of scientific
experiment. His only pleasures in life are his lover Marie and
their innocent young son. But when Woyzeck learns that Marie has
been unfaithful with the regiment's handsome Drum Major, he murders
his lover in a fit of rage and hopelessness. Based on a real-life
murder trial that took place in Germany in the 1820s, Woyzeck was
written in 1837 but not staged until 1913. This English translation
by Gregory Motton is published in the Nick Hern Books Drama
Classics series. The edition includes an introduction by Kenneth
McLeish, a chronology and suggestions for further reading.
alemanes.

A classic of the German stage adapted as a monologue. Though
written in 1837 Woyzeck is widely regarded as the first
Expressionist play due to its splintered and fragmentary nature.
Here it is presented in a new form.

"Written shortly before his death at the age of twenty three, Georg
Buchner's Woyzeck is often described as the first 'modern' play. It
tells the story of a poor soldier manipulated and abused by his
'superiors', turned into a specimen for cruel experimentation at
the hands of the medical establishment, and finally betrayed by the
woman he loves, with devastating consequences. In this new
adaptation of Buchner's fragmented and visceral text, with original
lyrics by Nick Cave, Icelandic director Gisli orn Gardarsson
transposes the story to an inhuman industrial landscape, and
fiercely reimagines the play's potent fusion of naturalism and
expressionism."
The life of Georg Buchner was short, intense, and tragic—and
extremely significant for the development of modern drama. His
three plays, Danton’s Death, Leonce and Lena, and Woyzeck, were
greatly ahead of their time in their penetrating dramatic and
psychological treatment. They served as an impetus for contemporary
schools of drama as different as the Theatre of the Absurd of
Ionesco and the Epic Theatre of Brecht.
lso presented in this only complete volume of Buchner in English
are his two powerful prose pieces, The Hessian Courier and his
short story, Lenz.
The Georg Buchner Prize is the highest literary honor for German
language writers, and the full extent of Buchner's influence-from
Gerhart Hauptmann to Christa Wolf, Max Reinhardt to Robert Wilson,
Alban Berg to Tom Waits-defies cataloging. When Georg Buchner died
in 1837 at the age of twenty-three, he left behind a small and
heterogenous body of work, most of it unpublished: three plays, a
novella, a political pamphlet, a dissertation, medical lectures,
and letters. Matthew Wilson Smith has newly translated Buchner's
introduction to On Cranial Nerves. Each text is accompanied by
explanatory annotations. The editor's introduction examines the
complexities of Buchner's short life and how they informed his
writing. The volume also contains ten illustrations. "Contexts"
includes Buchner's correspondence with the people who knew him
best, impressions of Buchner from a fellow medical student,
excerpts from Buchner's diary, the wanted poster calling for
Buchner's arrest for political conspiracy as well as the real-life
inspirations his novella, Lenz, and his best-known play, Woyzeck.
For ease of reference, "Criticism" is topically arranged by work
and includes assessments by, among others, Laura Ginters, Victor
Brombert, Bertolt Brecht, Henry Schmidt, Andrew Webber, Rainer
Maria Rilke, and George Steiner. Three accounts of important
productions of Danton's Death are reprinted, including John
Houseman's remarks on Orson Welles's staging. Finally, the speeches
of four winners of the Georg Buchner Prize-Paul Celan, Christa
Wolf, Heiner Muller, and Durs Grunbein-are reprinted in their
entirety. A Chronology of Buchner's life and work and a Selected
Bibliography are also included.
